Bio, Grandmaster Jerry Fisher
Grandmaster Fisher began his Martial Arts career in 1947 at the age of 7 in San Francisco.
The only Martial Art available at that time was boxing, He studied and trained at the YMCA, the Police Atheletic league, the Boys Clubs and Golden Gloves .
Competing in over 100 amateur bouts thought the age of 17. In 1955 a close friend came back from a military post in Okinawa and introduced him to something called " Karate".
He trained with the friend, Jerry Finney ,and on his own , combining karate with boxing, until the 60's. At that time he moved to Los Angeles and trained with various masters , by 1974 he had earned a 1st degree Blk Blt in Ozman Ryu from Bob Ozman, a 1st degree Blk Blt in Hapkido from Master Mike Slaney , a 2nd degree Blk Blt in Isshin Ryu from Grandmaster Kichiro Shimabuku and a 3rd degree Blk Blt in Kenpo from Grandmaster Ed Parker . All the time continuing to mix the system with american boxing and grappling ; he formed, in 1974 , Pacific Unified Martial Arts . the PUMA system. Certainly one of the very first, MMA , Mixed martial Arts.
Grandmaster Fisher was one of the original 4 founders of the TPA, Tounament Promoters Assoc. he spent several years as a"defensive tactic consultant ' for the LAPD. He was the Tournament Consultant to Columbia pictures for "the Karate Kid". Putting on over 50 National "KarateKid" Tournaments to advertise and Publicize the film.
Of all of his over 1000 Tournaments as a Director , a producer or head official he is especially proud of being the the Producer of Ed Parkers original "Internationals "for nine or ten years. Also acting as the center referee for all the finals on Sunday night , he came in contact with almost all of the great fighters of the "golden age' of Karate Tournament fighters.
A few of Grandmaster Fishers students in the PUMA system, of whom he is very proud, include, 8th degrees Ron Pohnel, and Ken Firestone. 7th degrees,Johnny Gyro, Leslie Fisher, 6th degrees Burnis White,and 5th degrees, Gates Foss, Mark Zacharatos, Greg Megowan, Todd Whetsel and many many more, over 100 in all.
> Grandmaster Fisher has had schools in California continuously from 1969 until the present. In 2002 he sold all of his interests and moved to Big Bear Lake, California. He opened a small school there intending for it to be a "retirement" activity and now has to go to a "waiting list' as he cant handle more than 100 students at a time . He has produced a dozen more fine Black Belsts in the Big Bear school and he continues himself to teach, grapple and kick box, 5 days a week.
> His Big Bear school is now the Big Bear Lake training center for many of the top UFC Fighters , to name only a few regulars, there are, Joe Stevenson( Fighting for the 155 lb Worlds UFC Championships on pay per view in England Jan 19th of 08) Josh Burkman, Cub Swanson, Tyson Griffin, Gray Maynard ,Court Magee ,and Sam Stout. And many more.
